Because I am a daughter,
Because I am a sister,
Because I am a friend,
Because I am a wife,
Because I am a mother……yes
because I have an identity!!
Did you know?
- Women make up
nearly more than 95% of the victims of forced sexual exploitation in the world.
- The majority
of persons smuggled illegally across country borders are women. Many of them
are kidnapped or sold by their own families into the sex industry.
- In every 90
seconds a women dies during pregnancy or child birth
- Every 2 out of
3 people illiterate in the world are women.
- There are
nearly 60 million child brides worldwide.
These facts
are only to name a few situations going in and around the world but situation
in the developing nations are much worse.
In our country
Nepal also we have all been well aware about the increasing violence against
women.
As per the sources
on the internet about nearly 40% of Nepalese women are reported victims of
Gender Based Violence. GBV is an attitudinal problem of men towards women in
Nepal. These facts and figures that come as an outcome of research is just
based on what has been reported. We very well know that most violence against
women are unrecorded and untold. Only about 20% seek legal justice. More than
80% of women feel insecure within their own community.
No matter how
much of educated and civilized our society claims itself to be gender
discrimination still lingers. The worse scenario here in our societies is that
a part of women are victimized of
various abuses physically and mentally and the other group of women is not
going against it but rather helping to increase it. So if a woman doesn’t go in
support of the other woman we can imagine how much further things can go wrong.
Also all the
superstitious belief around us still lingers. Even in the cities no matter how
educated the society might be. Women are beaten up and even fed with stools
as a punishment for blaming her to be a
"witch”. Girls are sold by her own family members to India and other south
Asian countries just because their economic status could heal a bit financially!!How
can a life be better by selling their own daughters? Being born as girl is still a curse not only
in the rural areas but in the cities. Want a proof? Well, all the abortion
cases in the name of a son!! All the
cases in the name of dowry! So these are things about violence to name a few.
There are so many things besides these going around which is a matter of shame
for us related to women violence that makes us loose our faith in Humanity!! Once
i saw a line and I feel it’s very well said as a voice against violence that
“You raped her because her clothes provoked you? I should break your face
because your stupidity provokes me!!” No matter how educated our societies in
the cities might be even an educated women is not left alone from all the
psychological and mental pressures and in spite of being educated she hardly
dares to raise any voice!
Even our
religious history says it all “SITA maiya
giving agni paricchya “?? Right??
So, let us all
keep on dragging our society this way or let
us make a move??
Now moving on to the next thing though small
but with a big impact,
How many of us
have heard the statements? “ keti le garney kaam haina yo ?” “keti
manche vaera badhi nabolekai thik ‘’ “kasto uttauli keti” “ Kasto kapda laaeko
?” “ kasto suwas navako keti?” I am
sure every Nepalese girl goes through this. A lot and a lot of criticism going
around every time and not even a single bit of encouragement for the positive
things she does in her life.
Also to add up
No doubt men are by nature stronger by physique and stamina. We define things like
“very manly job” and as “so girly “I see no problem in that cause by nature
some things are masculine and feminine but what we need to develop is the view
of our society towards a girl. The encouragement for a girl from
“
sakdenas” to timile sakchau’’ .Timle “padhera k garchau “ to “timle padhnu
parcha infact dherai padhnu parcha” “Timi badhi nabola” to “ timi vana hami
sunchau ra sath dinchau” She should be educated and privileged with every
single bit of encouragement and support that she deserves in her part.
What we don’t
understand is how even “small things can cause bigger changes!”
So finally here I ask you “What does being born as a
girl mean to you?”
